Don’t Stop the Music

October 14-15, 2011, Higher Octave Healing held the 2nd annual Don’t Stop the Music fundraiser at the ASU Recital Hall in Tempe, AZ. Over 30 music acts and bands performed at the 24-hour non-stop musical pledge drive event that was free to the public. In addition to providing community awareness and promotion of music therapy, the event raised funds for continued music therapy service for many individuals at HOH as well as our funds to ensure our continued support of supervision of music therapy fieldwork students and interns through HOH. We look forward to next year’s Don’t Stop the Music event. Learn more about Don’t Stop the Music and watch for upcoming information on how your band or musical act can participate and compete for the Grand Prize: a 3-song EP Recording! www.dontstopmusic.info

ASU Partnership

The Higher Octave Healing office is located off campus at Arizona State University in the ASU Community Services Building in Tempe, AZ. On a daily basis, our Board-certified music therapists work closely with students and interns enrolled in the ASU music therapy program. HOH provides opportunities for students to learn by observing and working directly with professionals in a clinical setting. Students and interns completing the AMTA-approved music therapy program at ASU and working with clients also have opportunities to be assisted and supervised by professionals through Higher Octave Healing. Learn more about the ASU music therapy program http://music.asu.edu/musictherapy/

Strength-Based Improvisation is an approach that is geared for participants with any amount of clinical music therapy experience to develop their use of improvisation, beginning with their particular area(s) of strength. Participants may use the instrument(s) of their choice, which can include percussion or voice. Non-threatening experiential opportunities are aimed at personal exploration while simultaneously learning new ways to creatively engage clients. The training embodies a “self-care” philosophy in that participants are encouraged to rely on the support they give and receive from each other in the improvised music, movement and art experiences and discussion.
Lisa and Robin have been offering SBI training since 2004.

Shift the paradigm by adapting our world to fit children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as we view their needs from a higher perspective.

One in every one hundred ten children born is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in our country (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2009.) We are presented with the opportunity to shift the paradigm by adapting our world to fit these children as we view their needs from a higher perspective. In turn, we can also help our planet and ourselves.

Historically, through a variety of interventions, we’ve sought to help children within this spectrum to function in society to reach their highest potential and enjoy the fullest quality of life. This paradigm was somewhat successful because we ‘adapted the child’ to fit into our world. In recent years, we’ve begun to shift this paradigm by adapting our homes, schools, parks, and daily lives to make our world fit our children. On a soul level, their presence can also be seen as a gift to encourage us to change the world we live in by restoring it to a more natural state.

Globally, environmental lawyers are working to protect the environment and promote human health. Nationally, consumers are driving the market for toxin-free, “green” products. At school, parents are making educated choices to find the right environment that supports their child’s sensory and structural needs. On a personal level, we are working to create a better world for all of our children by viewing their needs from a higher perspective: a more “whole-istic” perspective.

Right now is an exciting time. As we help to shift the paradigm for children within the autism spectrum by adjusting our environment to meet their needs, in turn, we are shifting the paradigm for our planet.
